Skyluar Neal, Steve Leonardo, and Scott Mello combined in yielding 4 hits and fanning 9 in the Marlins' home opener. East Providence scored a run in the third on base hits by Leonardo, James Reyes, and Nelson Morales. In the fourth, Colin Costa doubled, and Lenny Cuevas walked. Bob Rodericks then singled home Costa, followed by Ben Johnston's sacrifice fly to score Cuevas. Dean's threatened in the ninth loading the bases with 1 out, but Mello retired the side on a pop-out and ground-out to get the save. Jeff Burress pitched well for Deans recording 11 Ks in a complete game effort.
