After throwing 5 shutouts during the regular season Eamonn McDonough began the playoffs with his 6th shutout of the year. The Maddogs needed a shutout because Bryan Gauvin, after giving up an infield hit to the leadoff hitter, Johnny Cunningham, threw a no-hitter the rest of the way. Joe Sheehan got hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth inning. He stole second base and then with 2 outs he stole third and scored on the overthrow into left field. Gauvin struck out 10 and walked none. McDonough struck out 7 and walked 3, each pitcher hit a batter.
