THE DOCTOR CAME-A -CALLING ON THE BEACONS

In a pretty well played and exciting game both teams emptied their benches to close out the season.

The exciting game provided a glimpse into the future for these two Dorchester based clubs that showed why they both will be serious contenders for YBL opponents next season.

The game was capped by two outstanding catches as Hornet veteran 2B Dave Bonnell rose to the occassion, about 3 feet straight up, to rob McKay Club C Andrew McAllister of a sure base hit.

But the highlight film went to Hornet LF Jay "Doctor" Sholl's unbelievable diving catch of a deep screaming drive of the bat of Beacon's power hitting DH Chris Deane that should have easily gone for a triple or a HR.

But, the Doctor's vertical dive, with arm fully extended, gloved the ball, hit the dirt, skidded and then raised his arm showing the ball to the umpires as well as the stunned fans and players... Outstanding Doctor

RICK & ROCK TEAM-UP ON ROYALS

Hornets' hard luck pitcher Rick Dolan gets his first win of the season with help from The Rock. Hard luck as 3 of his 5 losses have been one run affairs.

CF Paul "The Rock" Larcoque helped Ricky to his first win with outstanding offense and defense in this contest. The Rock struck for a double and a triple, scored twice and had an RBI.

On defense, the sure handed and speedy Rock set a YBL *record with 9 put-outs by an outfielder, 3 or 4 of which were Web Gem grabs.

The Royals broke up Dolan's shutout in the 7th when 1B Pat Sultenfuss singled and advance to third after Hornet SS Mike Mori made a spectacular diving catch of a scalding line shot up the middle, but errored the throw to first attempting to double up the runner.

Royal RF Klemm came through with a clean single that scored the shutout breaking run from third.

*No official records are kept of put-outs.

HORNETS UP-END BEACONS

After the scorching heat of the day it was a beautifully air conditioned evening at Ronan Park as a refreshing cool breeze coming off the Bay offerred the players a respite from the weather.

The game offerred up some peculiarities too as both teams struck opponents pitchers for 11 hits while the Beacons scored 2 runs off those hits the Hornets managed to plate 11 runs.

To make the run totals seem even more myserious the Beacons had only 4 strike-outs while the Honets wiffed 11 times.

So it goes in the YBL, never a dull moment, take nothing for granted.

HORNETS BUMP BRAVES

The Comcast Crew were there eary to set-up for a last minute announcement to telecast the game. They got a dandy of a game.

Power, speed, stolen bases, luck, outfield assists, appeals and...Oh, did I mention luck?

The Braves brought the power with RF Jarome Farquharson and CF Tom Feeley who both hit major league bombs to the deepest part of right field for a double and triple respectively.

The Hornets brought the speed with six stolen bases and they also got the LUCK when SS Mike Mori's clutch base hit down the left field foul line in the sixth was ruled fair scoring the tieing run.

That was followed by P Kristaps Aldins equally clutch base hit that plated the winning run and closer Ricky Dolan's Papplebon like save.

The Comcast Crew seemed to really enjoy the thrilling contest and were upbeat and excited that they caught the action on replay of an appeal play on a missed third base.

Going into the 7th down 4-2, lead-off hitter Marc Crovo walked, Johnny Cunningham followed with a single and with one out both Sablone and Hanley singled to tie it up. Hudd followed with a sac fly to put the Dogs ahead.

DR. SHOLL RESCUES HORNETS

Hornet's southpaw Jay Sholl, referred to by his teammates as Dr. Sholl, paid a housecall at McConnell Park throwing a shutout.

Sholl got outstanding errorless defensive help from his team against the hard hitting South Boston Saints team (2nd lowest strikouts in the league).

Southie's home game at Ronan Park moved to McConnell due to massive puddling at Ronan. Both teams assisted in clearing up a pre-game mud pie at 3rd base to get the field ready for play.

Much credit goes to SH's Paul Tritter and SB's Mark Nickerson and an unidentified SB player who did most of the work.

Outstanding veteran SB pitcher Mark Nickerson, had both positive and negative results as he K'd 10 Hornets but gave up 11 hits to take the loss.

GUT CHECK AT REVERE HIGH SCHOOL

The Tony Conigliaro Memorial behind the backstop of the well manicured Revere High School baseball diamond was a witness to this bare-knuckle 10 inning old fashioned dog fight between the home team Rockies and the visiting Hornets.

This showdown at high noon quickly became a pitching and defensive battle between two opponents, neither of whom would yield and inch, in the sweaty, blistering, stiffling sunshine.

Twice the Hornets called for IBBs on power hitting DH Dan Jalbert who had gone 3 for 3 in previous at bats and the strategy paid off as the Hornets were able to keep Revere from capitalizing on scoring threats.

Perhaps the spirit of Tony C, God rest his soul, helped the Hornets as their manager made a private, quiet visit to his Memorial and paid his respects to the Sox legend.

HORNETS BUMP BREWERS

Hornet pitcher Mike Stefaniak (Tufts) both wins and saves his own game versus a very tough 1st place Brewers team.

Stefaniak, who was throwing a shutout until the 7th, was removed from the mound after giving up two runs on two hits, two walks, a fly ball out and a hit batter leaving the bases loaded with the tying run on second and one out.

3B Paul (Tags) Tagliaferi and Stefaniak switched positions as Tags went to the mound looking for the save. But Brewer leadoff hitter Fenton grounded to third where an alert 3B Stefaniak stepped on third and fired a high throw to first which just nipped Fenton's wild sprint to the base.

So, Stefaniak saved his own game.

Brewer's All Star catcher Tony Iafolla proved his reputation as he mowed down the speedy Hornet team by gunning down two runners trying to steal 2B.

As they say in the YBL... Anyone can beat anyone.

Savin Hill came out quick jumping on Chelsea's starter Mike Terrio who was making his first appearance of the season on the mound. Savin Hill got to Terrio for 5 runs, knocking him out after only 2/3rds of an inning.

Chelsea turned to rookie pitcher Ryan Baker who pitcher 3 1/3 innings with 7ks and 3 walks and veteran Kevin McGovern who went 3 innings striking out 3 and walking none. Baker and McGovern held Savin Hill off the board and kept them hitless over, while the Chelsea offense battled back into the game. With 2 outs in the 3rd inning Chris Santos hit a monster shot to left center scoring 2 runs. The following inning catcher Larry Doucette took advantage of a bases loaded situation by hitting a base clearing triple to tie the game, a walk, hit batter and an error allowed Chelsea to take the lead which they would not surrender the rest of the night.

The Hornets battled down to the last out of the game and threatened to score

HORNETS OUTDUEL SAINTS

In another great YBL pitching duel the Hornets squeak past the Saints scoring the winning run in the bottom of the sixth after LF Steve Mellor walked, stole second, then streaked home on 3B John Higgins clutch base hit spoiling Southie pitcher Eric Quinn's masterful pitching performance.

Hornets' battery of P Mike Stefaniak and C Kyle Browne contributed greatly to the team's victory with a rally stopping pick off and two caught stealing assists.

The Hornets for the 2nd time in a row are out hit but win on stellar defensive plays as the infield chalks up 12 assists.

The defensive play of the game was the tremendous catch by South Boston LF Powers whose spectacular running catch robbed Hornet LF Steve Mellor of an extra base hit.

HORNETS D-FENCE DOGS

Hornets jump on a short staffed Medford team plating 5 runs in the 1st inning and then ace pitcher Kris Aldins along with solid defensive support held off the dawgs attack the rest of the way.

Savin Hill's defense rose to the occassion with solid errorless play. Special mention goes to outstanding catches in the OF by Chris Anderson, Steve Mellor and two by RF Paul Larocque.

Larocque had the play of the game on a Trott Nixonish grass sliding catch of a low liner, then popped up and threw a strike to 1B doubling off the lead runner in the 2nd inning and stopping a Maddogs rally.

As mentioned Medford was short-handed with nine players but kudos go to their All Star Catcher Marc Crovo (Salem St), although saddled with a broken hand, he showed up on a holiday weekend to cheer for his team and provide moral support.

Gotta love guys like that!

Stefaniak smelling the blood strikes out the side to close out the game in the seventh for his first YBL career win and advancing the Hornet's record to 5-2.

Jim Rice Stadium, considering all the rain, was in pristine condition with freshly marked foul lines and meticulously raked infield. The good field conditions led to a masterfull "duel in the sun."

Always tricky with a nasty slider and great control veteran Astro pitcher Owen Carlson and young Hornet pitcher Kristaps Aldins squared off between the lines until Savin Hill struck for a couple runs on a error and 3 singles in the sixth that clinched it.

South End's CF Valdez threw out Hornet LF Steve Mellor at the plate in the 2nd and then robbed 1B Chili Davis of an extra base hit with a spectacular diving and rolling catch in left center field in the 4th that lit up the decent crowd at Rice Stadium.

It was nice to be playing ball even thought it was a very chilly evening at the ball park.

The brave fans, wrapped in blankets, weathered the biting chill and saw a close ball game as two outstanding pitchers duked it out in the frosty night air.

Savin Hill pitcher Kris Aldins struck out 7 and walked two while Cambridge Spinner pitcher Casey struck out 9 Hornets but gave up 8 base on balls.

In the old baseball parlance, walks kill, and that they did on this night.
