Yankees 6, Cubs 1
The Cubs drew 1st blood in the 1st inning scoring a run on a Mike Pietrasiewicz single and a Chad Besegai triple. That’s all the hitting Bryan Gauvin and Ken Kilduff would allow. Gauvin earned the victory pitching 5 innings allowing just those 2 hits and 1 ER while striking out 11. Kilduff hurled two hitless innings to close out the game while striking out 4.
Cubs starter, Steve Guerrera held the Yankees at bay with only 5 hits. However, a Frank Kowalski (1-2, RBI) solo blast in the 2nd and a Jeff Coveney (1-3, 2 RBI) RBI single in the 3rd gave the Yanks all the lead they would need. With 3 Cubs errors, the Yankees pushed 4 across in the 4th with just 1 hit in the inning by AJ Bucciarelli (2-4, 2R, SB).
