The Al Thomas Club stunned the nation with an improbable upset of the number-one-seed McKay Club Beacons in the first round of the YBL playoffs. All four games were decided by two runs or less, capped by a dynamic 1-0 victory for the A's in Game Four to clinch the series.

Wiley veteran Bill Clang toed the rubber against impressive rookie Tom Fitzpatrick, and the two did not disappoint the fans. Fitzpatrick allowed only 3 singles in shutting down the A's offense, yielding only a fateful rbi single to Chris McDonough in the 5th inning for the only run of the game.

Clang was a strike-throwing machine and held the powerful McKay lineup to five hits, walking nobody and striking out nine. For the series, Clang recorded two wins and a save, despite being mocked repeatedly and irrationally by one embarrassing spectator.

Bill Donahue and Peder von Harten had the other Al Thomas hits, while Mike Niland walked and scored the only run of

Another tight battle between two tough division rivals was decided in the last inning as the Al Thomas Club broke a 1-1 deadlock with 3 runs in the top of the 7th to squeak by the McKay Club 4-2 at McConnell Park.

Veteran Mike Barthel of the Beacons locked horns with Al Thomas rookie Kevin Zyrkowski in a great pitching duel that saw the teams knotted at 1-1 through 6 innings.

Rob Lerro put the McKay Club up 1-0 with a base hit that drove in Drew Tambling in the first inning. The game stayed that score until the 4th, when Brendan Wheeler roped a tripled and scored on Bill Donahue's single inside the first base line.

The teams traded solid defense for the next few innings, including a pair of doubleplays by the stingy McKay infield. The A's plated 3 runs in the top of the 7th on base hits by Kostas, Niland and Luciani, and a bomb sac fly by Steve Lambert.

The Beacons grabbed a run back in the bottom of the 7th and threatened

Classic playoff opener between Al Thomas and McKay Club. Down 5-0, Beacons put up 7 in the 6th, but the A's counter with 3 in 7th for an 8-7 win.

Matt McDougall shut down the McKay Club for 5 innings, while the A's took a 5-0 lead on rbi singles by Bill Donahue, Aidan Powers, Koury Hajjar and Steve Lambert, as well as a sac fly by Hajjar.

True to McKay fashion, they would not die and they woke up for 7 runs in the 6th inning on some walks, hit batsemen, a costly error and base hits by Rob Lerro (triple), Dylan Perez, Drew Tambling and Jack Owens (double).

Not to be outdone, the Al Thomas Club took those knockout punches but refused to hit the mat. With one out in the top of the 7th, Chris McDonough tripled to right center. Brendan Wheeler walked and Bill Donahue boomed a double to center, plating McDonough. John Kostas fell behind in the count, but worked a good at bat and roped a fly to right for a sac fly to tie the game. Aid

Brad Tardugno was the hero as his fielder's choice brought home the winning run in Kevin Salines, who singled to begin the eighth.

Mike DiCato (W, 1-0) earned the victory as he tossed four scoreless innings of relief. Salines finished the game going 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored while Elliot Shea, Tom Englehardt, Bobby Brown, Anthony Perry and Paul Covelle all recorded base hits.

For McKay Club, James Dalton (L, 0-1) was the tough luck loser as he held the Malden offense to just two runs over 7+ innings of work. Bryan Curran contributed a solid evening for the Beacons as he was 2-for-3 with 2 stolen bases.

Mike McCarthy (1-0) and Rich Wlodarczyk (S1) combine to blank the McKay Club in a tough fought battle on Opening Day for the Rockies at Revere High School. In the 4th, newly signed Rockie Tony Iafolla, blasts a 2-run homer to left to account for the games' only runs; scoring Chris Santosuosso who led the inning off with a walk. Rookie outfielder John DeAngelo guns down the only Beacon to pass second base at the plate in the 4th with Iafolla making a nice play at the plate scooping the short hop and tagging out Reinfurt to end the inning.

Andrew Tambling has a 2 hit day for McKay.
