The McKay Club let their bats do the talking while a Comcast viewership watched something special. Jack Owens (4-4 & 4RBI) & Connor Reinfurt (2-2 & 2RBI) smashed titanic HR's. Bryan Curran also went 3 for 4 with a run scored. A tremendous pitching performance by Big Game Mike Barthel (6-3) propelled the Beacons into a tie for the Yaz Division lead.

Nice recovery from an awful Sunday afternoon performance. Big Bats, Great Pitching, solid D and closed mouths win ball games!

Beacon Hill's Jon Merritt and Brighton's Matt Nicholson battled for 8 innings at Rogers Park before the Dodgers finally broke the deadlock in the top of the 8th.

Merritt, surely a YBL rookie-of-the-year candidate, threw a complete-game 4-hit shutout, settling down nicely after an early Sox threat in the 1st. Merritt struck out 6 and walked only 1 on his way to his 4th win of 2010.

Nicholson was also very impressive, scattering 5 hits over 8 IP, striking out and walking 2. Nicholson worked through a couple of jams early on, and nearly battled his way out of the 8th.

The Dodgers got a lead-off single from Jerrad Ryan in the 8th. After Ryan stole 2nd, Jay Shatto sac-bunted him to 3rd. Gregg Smith was then HBP and stole 2nd, and the Dodgers had a serious threat. Nicholson got Mike Navarro to pop out, which brought Nick Tapper to the dish with 2 outs. Tapper blasted a double on a 1-2 pitch to right-center, scoring Ryan and Smith.

The Dodgers got it rolling in the 2nd inning against Winter Hill starter Sam Kennedy-Smith, who pitched great in the loss for the Cyclones. After back-to-back Dodger singles by 1B Steve DeFusco and C Bryan Duffy and a walk from RF Steve Walsh, LF Joe Patrolia grounded to 3rd, scoring DeFusco and Duffy (on a throwing error to 1B).

That would be all the Dodgers would get, and 'The Moose' held the Cyclone bats in check all night to get a huge W for Beacon Hill.

The Dodgers and Bulldogs put on a show at Maplewood, playing 10 innings to settle a stalemate due to great pitching and solid defense from both squads.

Kyle Breidenstine pitched 9 2/3 innings of shutout ball to earn his 3rd win of the year. 'The Moose' was back to his old form on a humid night, allowing only 3 hits while striking out 4, walking 3 and getting 16 groundball outs.

Malden got a solid couple out of starter Jason Paul, then great bullpen work from Ken Olisky and Jon Shepard. The Dodgers threatened in the 5th (bases loaded, 1 out) and 7th (1 out Steve Walsh 2B), but Olisky got out of both jams.

The only run came on a shot off of the bat of DH Steve DeFusco. DeFusco hit a 10th inning solo HR to left-center field to take the lead. DeFusco then came on to pitch with 2 on and 2 out in the 10th. After a HBP, DeFusco calmed down to get the K and the save.

Beacon Hill brings another solid team game to defeat the Brighton Black Sox 6-5 on a cool night at Ronan Park. Dodger rookie southpaw Jon Merritt (W, 1-0) threw six innings of one-hit ball to win his YBL debut. Merrit allowed two runs, walked four and struck out seven. Sox starter Jared Rooney (L, 0-1) pitched very well in the loss, allowing only three earned runs.

Offensively, DH Joe Patrolia (3-for-3, 2 R, SB) has now hit safely in his first six at bats of the season. 3B Jerrad Ryan (3-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI) and CF Jay Shatto (2-for-3, BB, SB, RBI) also had good nights at the plate.

Shatto, a 5 time gold-glover, made what will have to be the catch of the year (best I've seen in 11 YBL seasons). In the 6th, Sox CF Eddie Skeffington connected on a Merritt fastball to deep left-center field. Shatto, on his horse on contact, made a running/leaping catch to rob a sure HR while tumbling over the fence and holding onto the ball.
