The South Boston Saints opened the 2009 season with an 8-3 win over the Medford Maddogs at Ronan Park in Dorchester. Rookie Jim Farell took the mound for the Saints in his Yawkey League debut. Farell, who previously hurled for the Penn State Nitanny Lions, struck out four before leaving midway through the fifth. YBL veteran Jon Tenney came on in relief to finish the game and did not allow a hit, scooping up his first win of the year in the process. Perennial all-star Rob Linn, who peppered three hits including a double, paced the offense for the Saints. Greg Harjula and Andrew Larocque each added a hit, as the South Boston offense was able to capitalize on six Maddog errors in a sloppy affair. Kenny Luongo and Buddy Hanley led the Medford offense, each adding two hits. Tyler Middleton, who was also making his YBL debut on the mound for the Maddogs, pitched well but was hurt by sloppy defense.
