In a close game, the Yankees took the season opener by a 4-3 score. The Yanks struck first with a run scoring single by Mike Moloney in the 2nd inning. The Cubs answered in the 4th with 2 runs highlighted by a Jeremy Broadwell RBI single. The score remained 2-1 until the 6th when the Yankees scored 3 runs thanks to Frank Kowalski and Ned Coffee doubles. Greg Crossman pitched out of a bases load jam in the bottom of the 7th for the save.
Ken Kilduff earned the win in relief hurling 3 innings while allowing 1ER. Yankees starter Bryan Gauvin struck out 8 of the 9 batters faced. The Cubs’ Broadwell made the defensive play of the game with a diving stop of a groundball that turned into a double play.
